What to do with the poor Blazer....it’s sitting behind the garage of the old house, I ran it last night and the exhaust looked unhappy

Kinja'd!!!

The power locks act up, the gas gauge doesn’t work, the fuel pump is noisy, the transmission sometimes slips, the windshield is cracked, it sounds like it has a stuck lifter or needs valves adjusted, the front end is loose, and it needs shocks. But it just won’t die. Not rusty at all, too. Currently at 313k kms.

I’m attached to it, but I could use what little money I’d get from selling it. The Subaru does most of what the Blazer can do, many times as well as the Blazer. I’d rather have a more off-road focused 4x4 for proper 4x4 activities. I just feel like I’ll miss this big dumb thing too much if I do sell it. It’s the only vehicle I’ve had that’s always started, always got me where I needed to go, always got me home, it’s like a dopey faithful dog.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

It also doesn’t allow me to get a different project or fun car/truck, because it’s taking my only other parking space. And just sitting there isn’t doing it any good. I think I’ll get a permit for it, clean it up a bit and drive it around sometime in the next couple weeks. Maybe the terrible driving dynamics compared to the Subaru will help me shed the rose-coloured glasses :p

Either make the your project, or sell it and let it be somebody else’s dopey faithful dog. No point in letting it just sit around.

Personally, I’d make it my project. Parts for these, even transmissions, are cheap. While they don’t have a big off-road following, they do have some and parts are made for them.

I'd be tempted to make it my project. Lift kit, snorkel, roof box etc.

A big part of the choice will probably be how much I want a manual transmission....if I'm okay without it, the blazer will be a good project. But if I want manual too much, it'd be better to start with something else

If you feel like you can’t give it the attention it needs, then sell it. I let a few things sit around for months because I didn’t know what to do with them.

I've definitely thought about that, I just usually find as many reasons to not do that as there are supporting the idea. The main one being that the IFS in these doesn't seem to like being lifted, but I see lots of opinions on that topic.

That makes sense. My humble suggestion:

Kinja'd!!!

They were available with a manual :)

The existence of manual ZR2s is one of the deterrents to building mine....but there's part of me what wants to take a crashed ZR2 and put its running gear in mine. A 4 door with the bigger diffs, wider stance and bigger wheels would be pretty cool....that would be a ton of work
